LANDOVER, MD-More than a decade after the adjoining Landover Mall closed its doors, Sears has announced it will shut down its store on Brightseat Road here in mid-March.

The retailer will begin a store liquidation sale beginning on Friday, Jan. 10, according to the Washington Post. Sears has continued operations at the site, despite the Landover Mall's closure in 2002 and its demolition a few years after that.

Sears officials said the store's lease had not been renewed. “Store closures are part of a series of actions we're taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” states Sears spokesman Howard Riefs.“These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail–at the store, online and in the home.” See story in the Washington Post.
