MIAMI-In a departure from its previous plans of developing a lavish destination resort, Malaysia-based Genting Resorts World has proposed building a scaled-down slots-only resort at the property once owned by the Miami Herald.

The plan, announced on Monday, calls for Genting to enter into a four-way partnership that would allow the firm to use a permit owned by Gulfstream racetrack to open the slots casino, according to the Miami Herald.

If the plan secures legislative and state gaming approvals, the permit would allow Genting's Resorts World Miami to operate 2,00 slot machines and off track betting at the facility. A portion of the casino's proceeds would augment thoroughbred purses at Gulfstream's racetrack and benefit Florida horse breeders, owners and trainers.

“I think it's game-changing,” says Lonny Powell, CEO of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association. “This is the first partnership where the revenue stream and investment would actually go back into the horses.” See story in the Miami Herald.
