NEW YORK CITY-The long anticipated multi-billion dollar East Side Access project is behind schedule once again and is over budget, Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials have revealed.
The scheduling and budget revelation came at a Manhattan oversight hearing of the New York State Assembly's Committee on Corporations, Authorities and Commissions on Friday.
Craig Stewart, senior director of the MTA capital plan, said the East Side Access project, which according to latest estimates was to cost $8.3 billion and be completed in 2019 is "slipping a little bit further and could cost more."
Stewart added, "We don't think we'll make 2019." A report reassessing the project's cost and timeline should be released in February, according to Newsday.
When completed, the East Side Access project will connect the Long Island Rail Road's Main and Port Washington lines in Queens to a new LIRR terminal beneath Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The mega project was at one time expected to be completed in 2009 at a cost of $4.3 billion. See story in Newsday.
