WASHINGTON, DC-The re-introduction of streetcars to downtown Washington and surrounding environs will foster significant economic growth says the District's Office of Planning.
The Office of Planning estimates the District will see up to $8 billion in new development within 10 years after completing work on the eight planned streetcar lines, according to the Washington Post.
The streetcar network is also forecast to increase demand for office space in the District by 3 million square feet and retail space by an additional 1.3 million square feet, states D.J. O'Brien, research manager with CoStar Group in Washington, DC.
The city is planning to build 37 miles of new streetcar tracks. Initially it intends to spend $1 billion on a 22-mile system that begins with the 2.4-mile H Street/Benning Road line, running along Second St NE and H Street NE. Arlington County has proposed the introduction of two streetcar routes: one running down Columbia Pike and another between Crystal City and Pentagon City. See story in the Washington Post.
