PHILADELPHIA-The city's Planning Commission unanimously voted on Tuesday to oppose a pending bill that would amend the city's zoning code to bar medical and dental offices in the first Councilmanic district.
The bill, introduced by Councilman Mark Squilla, would prohibit those uses in the district that covers a majority of South Philadelphia and the River Wards. The Commission previously opposed a bill that would later pass the City Council that banned medical offices in Northeast Philadelphia's 6th and 8th Councilmanic districts, according to Plan Philly.com.
The bills are viewed by many as a means to bar new methadone clinics in those districts. The Planning Commission serves in an advisory role to the City Council and its decisions are not binding.
