PITTSBURGH-H.J. Heinz Co., which is headquartered here, has agreed to give back nearly $1.5 million in incentives it received from Florence County, South SC in connection with a plant it built there in 2009 but is now closing.

Joe W. King, executive director of the Florence County Economic Development Partnership, and county officials said they are pleased with the settled amount of $1,488,891 that will be returned by Heinz from job and development incentives provided by the county, according to SCNow.

The Pittsburgh based firm, now owned by Berkshire Hathaway, will pay Florence County $689,000 this year in fee in lieu of taxes.

“We provided all of the statutory incentives that were available from the county and state, and then we gave them the grant money to lure them, which is standard process to do,” King said. “At the time they were a Fortune 500, publicly traded company. … An iconic name making a big investment means big incentives.”

Heinz announced it was shuttering the plant, affecting 200 workers in November. See story at SCNow.
