NEWARK-Less than a year after it opened with much fanfare and promise, the Key Food supermarket on Springfield Avenue here has closed down.
The owners cite a variety of issues for its closing in December, including construction delays, as well as the inability to secure a license from the state to accept food stamps from the Women's Infants and Children's program for the low-income neighborhood, according to the Star-Ledger.
"That really hurt us," Ray Ahmed, one of three co-owners of the New York-based franchise, said. "The WIC accounts for about 15% of business."
In the end, he added, "We had high expectations, but it just didn't work out. The business wasn't there." See story in the Star-Ledger.
