MIAMI—Soccer great David Beckham released details and renderings on his proposed PortMiami soccer stadium on Monday and was scheduled to meet with state legislators in Tallahassee today in a bid to secure state funding for the venture.
Beckham released details on the project to reporters at a briefing on Monday at the Miami Dade College Wolfson campus. Beckham said that he is hopeful he can change the minds of critics from the cruise ship industry that have charged the 25,000-seat stadium project would have an adverse impact on the port.
“I want to change their minds,'' Beckham said. “I don't want to be an enemy to the people that are opposed to the stadium. I want to work with them.”
John Alschuler, a real estate consultant from New York City, revealed details from a traffic study that he described as the most comprehensive ever undertaken at the port, according to the Miami Herald. Alschuler noted that he expected about a third of the stadium's spectators to bypass downtown Miami and arrive through the nearly $700-million port tunnel scheduled to open in May.
Also on Monday, locally based architectural firm Arquitectonica released preliminary details of the Major League Soccer (MLS) stadium site plan if it were based downtown at the Port of Miami. The conceptual master plan included a stadium design developed by 360 Architecture in collaboration with Arquitectonica.
“Miami's passionate soccer fans deserve an iconic stadium, and the Port of Miami provides a setting that would be truly unique not just for soccer in America, but globally,” said Bernardo Fort-Brescia, Arquitectonica's founding principal. “The stadium would build on the incredible evolution of downtown Miami, and create a vibrant hub of cultural and entertainment activity along Miami's waterfront, framed by significant new parks, plazas and open spaces along the bay.” See story in the Miami Herald.
