COLUMBIA, MD—The plan by Howard Hughes Corp. to build a $1-billion mixed-use project on 66 acres of woodlands here was discussed at a public meeting on Monday at Howard Community College.

The ambitious plan that calls for approximately 4.8 million square feet of development was for the most part well received, although some attendees expressed concerns about traffic and building heights.

The plan, if approved, could involve the development of 2,100 residential units, a 250-key hotel, 203,000 square feet of retail, up to 4,360 parking spaces and 225,000 square feet of civic uses that could include a new county library, state-of-the-art swim center, conference center and concert hall, according to the Baltimore Sun. Howard Hughes Corp. is also looking to build more than 1.1 million square feet of general and medical office space on three plots.

John DeWolf, senior vice president for Howard Hughes, says the firm hopes to secure all necessary county approvals for its land use plan by the summer or fall of this year. If that is achieved, construction could begin in the spring of 2015. See story in the Baltimore Sun.
