HONOLULU—Local officials have green-lighted a proposal for a 1,500-unit residential mixed-use at the site of the former Kam Drive-In.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that Robertson Properties Group won final approval from the Honolulu City Council this week on the project, in part by agreeing to make at least 30% of its units affordable to those in lower-income categories. Half will need to be on-site, and the remaining affordable units must be either within one-half mile of the project, or near other transit hubs along the city's planned rail transit line, the paper said.

The California-based developer says it will invest $767 million in the mixed-use project which will be built near Pearlridge Center.

The city approve the rezoning of more than 14 acres for Robertson Properties plan, to community business mixed-use district, which has a 350-foot height limit. The property had been zoned with a 60-foot height restriction.
