SAN FRANCISCO—Developer Lennar may begin work on its planned Treasure Island residential development earlier than expected, according to local media reports.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the devlopers may be able to start work on the redevelopment plan after the eastern part of the island and Yerba Buena Island are transferred to the city later this year.

Lennar hopes to build 8,000 homes in the project, a quarter of them at affordable-housing rates.

But first the the Navy and state agencies are checking to ensure that cleanup of the island has been effective.

Lennar is also still facing opposition from citizens concerned over the environmental and traffic impacts of the development.
