ATLANTIC CITY, NJ—In the ongoing shakeout of casino properties here comes word from Bob McDevitt, president of Unite Here Local 54 that The Showboat Atlantic City Hotel and Casino will announce today that it will be closing soon.

McDevitt says that workers will be receiving required WARN notices today of the impending closure of the casino hotel. “I know that the workers are getting issued WARN Act notices tomorrow,” McDevitt said on Thursday. “We were notified by the company today and we began notifying the workers immediately.”

The casino employed more than 2,100 workers as of June 2, according to The Press of Atlantic City.

“The fact that Caesars would close a casino that continues to be profitable … is a criminal act upon the citizens of Atlantic County,” McDevitt says.

State Assemblyman Chris Brown, R-Atlantic says, “My heart goes out to the over 2,000 families who will be hurt by this decision. We are not talking about debits or credits on a spreadsheet, we are talking about human beings who get up every day and work hard to provide for their families.“

Caesars Entertainment Corp. could not be reached for comment in the press report. The Atlantic Club Casino Hotel, which was bought in a bankruptcy auction by Caesars and Tropicana Entertainment, closed in January. In May Caesars warned another closure might be in the offing. “We're looking at options to continue to reduce the cost of doing business here,” said Caesars spokesman Gary Thompson. “One option is to reduce capacity, as we did with the closure of Atlantic Club.” See story in the Press of Atlantic City.
