MCLEAN, VA—The National Institute of Standards and Technology has awarded locally-based MITRE Corp. a $29-million award to operate a new cyber security research and development center.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and University of Maryland, College Park will work with MITRE on the project that will be based at the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence in Montgomery County, according to the Baltimore Business Journal.

MITRE is a non-profit organization created for the purpose of operating federally funded research and development centers.

“This alliance will present phenomenal opportunities for our faculty, staff and students to engage and work with our partners at MITRE, the incredible personnel at NIST and our nation's business community,” University System of Maryland Chancellor William E. Kirwan said in a statement.

MITRE expects about 40 information security professionals to staff the new center. See story in the Baltimore Business Journal.
