WASHINGTON, DC— The AFL-CIO Building Investment Trust is looking to have 17 acres it owns on Old Meadow Road rezoned for 1.8 million square feet of mixed-use development.

The zone change would allow for up to 1,900 housing units in six buildings in what the AFL-CIO trust calls “The Highland District.” The AFL-CIO acquired the properties in 2011 for $138.5 million, according to the Washington Business Journal.

The Highland District's six buildings could be all residential, or five residential and one office building.

"The planning vision for The Highland District seeks to transform an early 1970s-era suburban office park into a pedestrian-friendly residential community rich with parks, amenities and convenient services," the AFL-CIO said a statement that accompanied the application.
