WASHINGTON, DC—Mayor-elect Muriel Bowser has received praise from the business community for her work to bring new project to her district as a member of the D.C. Council. In 2015, the real estate community is hopeful she can jumpstart development initiatives citywide.
During her two terms on the D.C. Council, Bowser shepherded a number of projects in her district, including redevelopment plans of the former Walter Reed Hospital. She also assisted in securing an agreement with Safeway and Duball LLC for a plan involving a mix of retail and apartments, according to the Washington Post.
Bowser, who serves as chairman of the council's economic development committee, will likely have to take a position on the $300-million D.C. United stadium at Buzzard Point as well as redevelopment of the Reeves Center on U Street and construction of a new city office building on Good Hope Road SE in Anacostia.
Bowser has said she wants to see D.C. United remain in the city but is concerned about trading away the Reeves Center to developer Akridge for needed stadium land. If a deal isn't done in the final days of Mayor Vincent C. Gray's term, the D.C. United stadium request will land on her desk in January. See story in the Washington Post.
