EAST HANOVER, NJ—Locally-based Novartis Pharmaceuticals, which has announced job cuts several times already this year, reports it will layoff 200 workers by February.

The firm, which is shifting its focus from primary care to cardiovascular disease, filed a notice of the pending layoffs effective Feb. 16 in East Hanover with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, according to NJ Advance Media. Novartis houses its US headquarters in East Hanover.

"We do not take these decisions lightly but do believe they are necessary to ensure we better serve the needs of our patients and customers and position our U.S. General Medicines business for long-term success," the company said in a statement.

Novartis announced job cuts in January, February and April of this year. In October, Novartis Pharmaceuticals realigned its operations to three units: Cardiovascular and Respiratory, Immunology and Dermatology, and Neuroscience. See story at NJ Advance Media.
