SAN ANTONIO—Westport Properties, an owner/operator of US self-storage facilities under the brand US Storage Centers, has opened a national training center here featuring workstations and an area for hands-on training with customers. The center will allow the firm to develop and train employees with a professional program in order to better serve its customers.

“Historically we’ve used a decentralized training approach to help our people learn and embrace the ‘Westport Way’ and it has served us well to this point,” said Charles Byerly, president and CEO of US Storage Centers. “With the significant amount of supply coming into many of our markets, it becomes even more important to make sure our team is trained and embracing our Westport Way.”

Westport believes adding this national training center as part of its training process will help get new team members up to speed more efficiently, obtain a disproportionate share of rentals and help to ensure its customers have a consistent quality experience across all its facilities, Byerly says.

“Competition for new tenants is more fierce today than in the past 14 to 15 years,” Byerly tells GlobeSt.com.  “We’ve reached a new level of available supply and the larger players are more sophisticated than ever, which creates a tougher battlefield when seeking that next new tenant. In order to make sure we are achieving our goals and gaining a disproportionate share of rentals at a price per rental that is accretive to our plan, we need our team members to have all the tools available to them to succeed. We believe having a national training center in the middle of the US will be the most efficient and productive path to support achieving our plan and goals.”

According to Self-Storage Association Statistic Brain, 65% of Americans who rent a self-storage unit have home garages and 33% have basements. Self-storage companies have paid more than $3.5 billion in local property taxes and more than 170,000 employees work at self-storage companies.
