HOUSTON-Cameron, a division of wellhead equipment provider Cooper Cameron Corp., is riding the crest of the current energy boom as it commits to a nine-story, 215,000-sf world headquarters project on 8.6 acres in Westway Park.

The project site is part of a 150-acre master-planned office park located on the northeast corner of Sam Houston Parkway and Clay Road. Cameron’s headquarters will neighbor a 130,000-sf, two-story office building that is fully leased, with tenants such as Stewart Title, Ryland Group Inc. and Nextel Communications Inc. and a 51,000-sf office structure for Seismic Exchange Inc.

The office park had been part of 610 acres that the Wolff Cos. had bought from a rancher in the late seventies, David Hightower, Wolff’s senior vice president tells GlobeSt.com. The original plot had been purchased because of its proximity to Beltway 8. Interestingly enough, says Hightower, Beltway 8 had been scheduled to have been built in 1972, but had been delayed by the oil embargo and other issues until the 1990s.

Wolff had sold off a large portion of the land for residential development and began laying the groundwork on Westway Park in 1998. Houston-based Hines Co. will serve as developer for the latest undertaking and D.E. Harvey Builders will act as general contractor. The class-A building is being designed by Helmuth, Obata + Kassabaum (HOK), with Roger Soto acting as lead architect. Cameron also has chosen Molly McIntyre as the interior designer on the project. The location will house a 550-car garage and 200 surface parking spaces.

David Hightower had been Wolff’s point man in the sale, while Charles R. Gordon and Steven R. Biegel of Trione & Gordon ONCOR International had represented Cameron in the pact. Gorden and Biegel will continue in advisory capacities until the project delivers. Cameron presently has its world headquarters at 13013 NW Freeway in Houston.
