LONDON-The new headquarters of the Greater London Authority was topped out by Minister for London Nick Raynsford last week. He hailed the structure, designed by Lord Foster as: ‘An exceptional building for an exceptional city.’

The new GLA building occupies a Thames-side site at CIT’s More London development on the South Bank, close to the Tate Modern gallery, On completion next year it will provide assembly chamber, committee rooms and public facilities, together with offices for the Mayor, London Assembly Members and GLA staff. It provides 185,000 sf of space on ten levels that can accommodate 440 staff and members.

The ‘see-through’ design echoes Foster’s work on the Reichstag in Berlin, emphasising the need for transparency in government. But its most prominent occupant, Mayor Ken Livingstone, is characteristically irreverent about the building, dubbing it the ‘glass testicle.’
