Jonathan A. Schein President & CEO Real Estate Media GlobeSt.com

10/01/03: Much has been made about the exporting of white-collar jobs overseas, and this is a real problem when job growth is essential to maintaining this economic “recovery.” Since real estate itself can’t be exported, many of the functions required to maintain it will remain here. However, there are many jobs outside this particular function that are in danger of–quite literally–going away. According to the US Department of Labor and Forrester Research, more than three million jobs will move offshore by 2015. Surprisingly, architecture-oriented work is expected to move approximately 185,000 jobs to foreign soil in that time. Think about this for a moment. Better living through technology has brought us to the point where a commercial building, office space, single-family homes, shopping centers and hotels–located anyplace in the nation–can all be designed half way across the globe–and done so for less than half the cost that would be incurred here. This is a definite trend. But is it progress?
