Alsop to Spearhead Teeside Initiative

LONDON-Will Alsop has been selected to masterplan the Greater Middlehaven project in Middlesbrough in North-East England. Tees Valley Regeneration; English Partnerships; One NorthEast and Middlesbrough Council are promoting the scheme to bring new life to the former dockyards and shipyards on the banks of the Tees.

Broadly, the project will provide 1400 new homes, 500,000 sf of office space and around 2000 jobs in a new ‘urban village’. English Partnerships has already invested £18 million in reclaiming the site after 150 years of heavy industrial use.

39 acres of land around the dock has already been reclaimed and outline planning permission obtained for housing, a business park and leisure facilities.

Tees Valley Regeneration chief executive Joe Docherty said: “Alsop Architects are leaders in exciting and innovative development. They will produce new ideas which will build upon previous work undertaken . Their expertise will be vital in the delivery of our ambitious vision for Middlehaven. It will also raise the standard of design quality for Greater Middlehaven, Middlesbrough and the Tees Valley as a whole.”
