TRENTON-A South Trenton tract known as the Lamberton Street Redevelopment Area will be the site of a combination of new construction and reconstruction that will turn a group of abandoned buildings into 37 new housing units, including condos. A trio of local developers is behind the project, including HHG Development, Roebling Redevelopment and Centre Street.

HHG won designation from the city council as the area’s redeveloper a year ago, and subsequently renamed the zone the Trenton Ferry Historic District. According to HHG principal Michael Goldstein, the redevelopment will consist of four separate sections. The centerpiece will be the Cracker Factory at 242 Centre St., a 29,000-sf Victorian Era plant where oyster crackers were baked, which will be turned into 18 condos.

The other elements include Everett Corner, an intersection named for an 1800s horse trader who lived nearby, where eight new condos will replace existing abandoned residences. Another half-dozen homes will be restored on Centre Street, and five new residences will be constructed on Centre Street to round out the project.

The Trenton Ferry Historic District project replaces an earlier proposal by Leewood Real Estate Corp. nearly two years ago. That proposal, which would have razed all of the site’s buildings, did not win approval from the city council, which subsequently tapped HHG as lead developer. The latter acquired most of the redevelopment site, encompassing six separate properties, a year ago.
