WASHINGTON, DC-Northrop Grumman Corp. is expanding its already-large base here to accommodate its headquarters operations: the company just announced plans to move its corporate offices from Los Angeles to the region by next year. With this decision, it will be joining such firms as Hilton Hotel and Science Applications International Corp., both of which decided in 2009 to relocate their California operations in the area.

Like Hilton and SAIC, Northrop Grumman has not made a decision exactly where it will situate its headquarters. The company is currently engaged in a search to identify a specific location in District, Maryland or Virginia. It plans to complete the search by spring 2010 and open the new corporate office by summer 2011. The new corporate office will house approximately 300 people.

According to a statement by CEO Wes Bush, Northrop is moving for its customer base, which is very large here. Indeed, it is one of the largest employers in the region. Divisions here include its corporate governance operations, at Monday Properties’ 1000 Wilson Blvd. in Rosslyn; Northrop Grumman Information Technology at 7575 Colshire Dr. in McLean, VA; Mission Systems at 12011 Sunset Hills Rd. in Reston, VA; and Electronic Systems at 1580-A West Nursery Rd., outside of Baltimore. Northrop Grumman did not return a call to GlobeSt.com in time for publication.
