NEW YORK CITY—The economic downturn thatleft many retailers struggling to connect with customers anddemonstrate value was a boon for dollar stores. The now-ubiquitousoperations are expanding all over the country, and the Northeast isno exception.

CBRE's Naveen Jaggi, Houston-based senior managing director ofretail services, says the sector's major players—Dollar General,Family Dollar and Dollar Tree— "have all shown increased annualgrowth consistently over the past three years."

In early January, Dollar General announced that it would open atotal of 625 stores in 2012, some of them in new markets. Aspokeswoman confirmed that the company anticipates opening fivestores in Massachusetts, its 40th state.
