WASHINGTON, DC—The long-anticipated redevelopment of theMcMillan SandFiltration Plant is now before theDC Zoning Commission.

The DC Planning Commission plans to hold three public hearingson the 2.1-million–square-foot redevelopment plan with the firstscheduled last night. The project began seven years ago whenVision McMillan Partners was tabbed by DCofficials to lead the redevelopment initiative, according to theWashington Business Journal.

The planned-unit development secured approval by theHistoric Preservation Review Board six months ago.Some of the merits of the project that is expected to drawconsiderable public input during the zoning commission hearings,include: preservation of all 24 historic buildings on the 25-acresite, a walkable community design, a 17,000-square-foot communitycenter and pool, affordable housing, 12 acres of public open space,3,200 permanent jobs, and $1.2 billion in new tax revenue.
