MIAMI—This past February, Northern Trust announced that it haddeployed a production-grade distributed ledger for one of itsclients, a private equity fund. Beyond signaling that thetechnology was ready for use in the real world, the question ofwidespread adoption of distributed ledger technology (DLT) becameone of when, not if.

The deployment provides insight into a class of use cases—assetmanagement—often passed over for more ambitious projects. Even whenasset management is discussed in the context of DLT, the focus isoften on asset registries rather than asset management functionsthemselves.
