NEW YORK CITY-Some residents and politicians hailing from the Upper East Side are rallying against a high-rise Memorial Sloan Kettering cancer center here.

A rally was staged on Friday against the City Planning Commission's approval of the 750,000-square-foot, 23-story building. Among the notable participants at Friday's rally included Manhattan Borough President candidate Gale Brewer and City Council District 5 hopeful Ed Hartzog.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg awarded Sloan Kettering and CUNY the bid to develop the site, which is currently a garage on York Avenue, in September 2012. In August of this year, the City Planning Commission approved a “bulk variance” for the project that now goes before the full City Council for approval. See story in The Real Deal.
