TENAFLY, NJ-The Bergen County United Way is scrambling to secure financing for its special-needs housing project at 311 Tenafly Road here.

Tom Toronto, president of Bergen County United Way, said he's working diligently to secure financing for the venture and is committed to having the $1-million project built no matter what. The one-story, 10-bedroom independent-living facility would be home to residents who have a diagnosed developmental disability.

“Securing funding is never easy,” Toronto says. “Right now, we're looking for partners. We don't have a definitive answer, but we've made applications to the state's housing mortgage finance agencies to help with the construction process. The state needs this kind of housing desperately. We hope the state will be interested in helping us.”

The borough is expected to deed the property to the non-profit agency later this month. See story in The Record.
