CHANTILLY, VA—A proposal to build a massive mixed-use project at the 225-acre Chantilly Crushed Stone quarry here has met with some resistance from Loudoun County officials despite the threat from the property owner to continue quarrying operations for another 50 years if the plan is not approved.

Chantilly Crushed Stone's Waterside Town Center plan that calls for the development of thousands of residential units and 4 million square feet of non-residential space is contrary to Loudoun County's land use regulations, according to county staff.

Loudoun County planners stated in public documents, "county policies preclude residential development on the subject site and limit the amount of mixed-use development. Therefore staff recommends denial of the application."

The Loudoun County Planning Commission has moved the Waterside application to a work session, rather than vote, and there is no timetable for action. See story in the Washington Business Journal.
