WASHINGTON, DC—The D.C. Council in a unanimous vote, has appropriated $200,000 to undertake an economic analysis of the proposed $300-million D.C. United stadium to be built on Buzzard Point.

The study sought by Councilwoman Muriel Bowser, who is also the Democratic nominee for DC Mayor, will determine the project's potential costs and benefits, according to the Washington Business Journal. The Council has already agreed to have the District commit to a cap of $150 million in site acquisition and infrastructure investment costs in connection with the stadium project.

"We know that the executive and developers have been looking at all of the components of this deal for many months, and it would behoove the council to have this expert advice as we move forward," Bowser said at the Wednesday night Council hearing.

Mayor Vincent Gray has championed the major league soccer stadium venture and is looking for more funding for the stadium as part of the 2015 budget. It is unclear how much funding for the stadium project will be included when the council votes on its formal adoption next month. See story in the Washington Business Journal.
